News - System Menu v4

Page history last edited by haruspex 2 days ago

This page is out of date!  If you want to upgrade/downgrade to a particular System Menu, then you should go to the Firmware page and learn the latest method.

If you want to learn how to launch WiiWare from the SD(HC) card, then read the instructions on the WiiWare page.

** How To Install System Menu v4.0! **

NOTE: Updated instructions included on the Firmware page, please follow those as they help you better protect against a brick

---  SUMMARY  ---

This tutorial uses Waninkoko's "cIOS36 rev.8" and "Firmware Updater 4.0", as well as a IOS Patcher by "ppc_gba", to guide you through the installation of patched System Menu v4.0 files.  Only the required IOS's, Shop Channel, Mii Channel, Photo Channel 1.1, and System Menu 4.0 are installed.  The IOS's will remain Trucha-Patched.

NOTE:  As of now, updating to System Menu v4.0 will cause loaders, such as cIOSCORP, Preloader, Starfall, etc..., not to work!  If you are dependant upon these loaders, you are encouraged NOT to update!  Also, during this update, the Twilight Hack is completely removed, with no current way to get it back.

AS ALWAYS...  I/WE TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY WII’S THAT GET BRICKED DURING THE PROCESS. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!

This installation has been confirmed "WORKING" on the following firmware versions:  3.2U, 3.3U, 3.4U

This installation has been confirmed "NOT WORKING" on the following firmware versions:  ALL "JAP" Region Consoles!

---  FILES NEEDED  ---

Mirror 01 - Sharebee

Mirror 02 - Badongo

Mirror 03 - zSHARE

Mirror 04 - Megaupload

Mirror 05 - DepositFiles

Mirror 06 - Rapidshare

---  INSTALLATION  ---

01.  Download the ZIP file, from one of the mirrors above.

02.  Extract the ZIP file to the root of your SD card.

03.  You should now have three new folders, in your "apps" folder ("cIOS rev8", "Firmware 4_0", and "IOS60 Patcher").

** If you are POSITIVE you have cIOS36/IOS249 rev.8, or higher, installed, you may skip to Step 08.  Otherwise, you MUST continue to Step 04.

** If you have successfully installed and run Waninkoko's USB Loader v1.x, you already have the required cIOS installed, and you may skip to Step 08!  Otherwise, you MUST continue to Step 04.

04.  Launch the "cIOS36 rev8 Installer", from The Homebrew Channel.

05.  When it asks you the type of installation you want to use, press Right, on the D-Pad, and select Network Installation.

06.  Watch carefully, to be sure everything installs successfully.  If you encounter any errors, rerun the "cIOS36 rev8 Installer", until it installs correctly.

07.  Reboot.

** Steps 08-10 can/will take 20-30 minutes to complete!  DO NOT shut off you Wii during this process!

08.  Launch the "Firmware Updater 4.0", from The Homebrew Channel.

09.  Watch carefully, to be sure everything installs successfully.  If you encounter any errors, rerun the "Firmware Updater 4.0", until it installs correctly.

10.  Reboot.

** Steps 11-19 will patch IOS60, to allow "unofficial" titles, to be run from the SD Card.

[Steps 11-19 removed as they are confirmed to brick your Wii.  If you want to run unofficial titles, use dop-IOS MOD to update IOS50 for v3.4, IOS60 for v4.0 or v4.1, or IOS70 for v4.2 with the signature hash check (trucha bug).]

Your System Menu/Firmware should now be updated to v4.0!

Guys come on who don`t have Wad Manager installed ??? who can`t get it ??? remove the steps of the CRAZY STUPID Patcher, STEPS 11-18 ARE USELESS !!! why put people at risk ??? i ordered Infectus and i have a nand backup what if others don`t ???? DITCH THE STUPID 60/61 Patcher :`(

BTW i have an offline installation but unfortunately its for NTSC-U only, its just 3 files a boot.dol (its simple installer if u have Wad Manager u can skipt it) and 2 wad files IOS60.WAD and Sysmenu4.Wad just install IOS60 1st then install the sysmenu and thats it really that simple (its without the Truncha Bug but i can get the Truncha Bug with Dop-IOS or Truncha Bug Restorer) !! i did that for like 5 Wii`s, the reason i followed this tutorial is because i wanted to test the online method to go ahead for the 4.1 Waninkoko Update and now i have a Bricked Wii because of You can Skip Steps 11-18 which was BELOW Step 18 which is also not a smart move too :`/ am gonna make a major Update for this tutorial just wait and see :)

If you have BootMii properly installed and have the proper files on your SD card, then boot your Wii with the SD card inserted. If you have BootMii, you will be presented with the BootMii screen when you turn on your Wii. It looks like this:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/File:Bootmii_screenshot.png

Try booting with no SD card inserted. If you see a brief set of flashes from the blue slot LED right after you hit the power button, try a different SD card. Make sure you have a directory named "bootmii" with the "armboot.bin" and "ppcboot.elf" files inside.

If you do not see those flashes, BootMii/boot2 is not installed.

It is not possible to install BootMii on only your Flash card (it's a card, not a cartridge). You must have a working Wii when you install BootMii. It is a preventative measure, it can't fix a Wii which is already broken. Also, simply having BootMii installed will not always save your Wii anyway, because you must also use BootMii to create a NAND backup. If you don't have a NAND backup to restore to your Wii with BootMii, then you're out of luck.

Anyone know if there are cases where you can use a different Wii from the same batch (one that maybe your friend has) to create a NAND backup for your own Wii? I've not read about cross-Wii NAND issues.

Each Wii Have a Unique Key its impossible to use a nand backup from another Wii : ( well unless someone hack the encryption there will be at that time but it will take a lot of work involved BTW same story goes for PS3 and i think the 360 too :1

I figured as much, boss, thanks for the info. Take note everyone, use BootMii to create a NAND backup as soon as you can when hacking your Wii. Even if you never end up needing it, you'll feel safer as you futz about.

Hi guys!!! I just brick my Wii.... sad :( But I wanted to know if I could repair it.. There's a black screen if I try to access the system menu but I have bootmii installed (no NAND backup DAMN!!) and with thaht I can still load backup games loader the homebrew channel, so I asked myself, if the homebrew channel still works.... I must be able to do something!

If you don't have a NAND backup, you may be out of luck. If you can run dop-IOS, you may be able to re-install the System Menu and hope for the best: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Dop-IOS/Dop-IOS_MOD However, you could also just run everything from Bootmii. Many USB Loader apps allow you to launch the disc channel so you can play the games you already own.

I can run a backup loader from bootmii and then homebrewchannel, that's not too bad. I need to know.... can I start Wiiware games FROM the homebrew channel?? And, have you hears of savemii ?? Maybe I can try that... or another idea, can I just downgrade my wii to like 3.2 and the system menu will be there ?

Help. I was stupid, and I bricked my Wii using the ios60 patcher.
I thought I had bootmii installed, and nand backup, but I'm getting a black screen when I boot.
Is there any way to save my Wii?

Jean-Philippe said

at 1:31 pm on Nov 4, 2009

@paulb no it didn't affect my save file.
@simple, shit sorry for you! I also bricked my wii but the only thing that saved me was bootmii.... if it's not installed I don't think that you can unbrick your wii but wait for an answer ofsomeone else, just in case :P if there's a way to lunch bootmii I recommend you to use the paulb solution that he gave me, it worked perfectly!

paulb said

@simple
do you have the bootmii files on a sd card or maybe your pc?
i dumped my nand backup onto the pc along with the bootmii folder.
if so try booting with the files on the sd card.
that way you can at least find out if you did install bootmii.

other than that i have no idea mate
you could try google, but without bootmii i think you could be out of luck

thanks paulb. i'm going to figure it out tomorrow when i get my sd card reader back from my friend.

profile picture

okay so. Got my card reader back, checked my 8g sdhc, had my NAND and a bootmii folder.
stuck this on a brand new 2g regular sd, along with paulb's method above, and nothing.
at this point i'm pretty sure i installed bootmii in boot2, but it never boots.
I HAVE MY NAND. Why won't it work?

profile picture

paulb said

at 1:06 am on Nov 8, 2009

did you try sticking the 8gig card in?
there should be an instaler.log file on there with your bootmii files
telling you if you did install bootmii.

profile picture

simple said

at 1:14 pm on Nov 9, 2009

def tried that.
i think it didn't work cause its sdhc. no idea.
could i fix this by chipping my console?

profile picture

paulb said

at 8:13 pm on Nov 9, 2009

Did you format the new 2gig card?

needs to be FAT

then put bootmii folder, private folder
and the installer.log (not 100% sure you need that but hey)
keys.bin & nand.bin on the root of the card

If that doesn't work its time to troll the second hand shops for a cheapo base unit

Fell victim to the IOS60/61 brick also. Too late when I read the comment got my wii bricked already. I think my Wii has a Modchip (as what the seller told me) I have my SD with bootmii in it but no nand. I tried paulb links but it did not work. I am so tired now. Is there any other work around. I got what I want earlier to upgrade from 3.3u to 4.0 I should not have used the IOS60/61. What's the use of this anyway? I bet there's are lots who got their Wii bricked also because of this tutorial, call me or us dumb the chances of getting your wii bricked with the IOS is far more than expected. Now I don't know what I am going to do. Even if I send this to Nintendo are they going to accept chipped Wii? Plus the expenses and how to send it to them.

@Darndistut
can you still access homebrew thru bootmii?
If so I understand (i may be wrong so don't quote me) that you can run Anyregionchanger
and somehow do a system restore provided you are online.
This apparently downloads a selected system version of your choice.

If that soesn't work slap yourself across the back of the head for not following instructions and making a NAND backup.
Then head down to your local 2nd hand shop a get a cheapo base unit.

yet the os still tells me i'm on 4.1 & nothing has been deleted or bricked

@paulb
No dice! I can't access the HBC from the looks of it I only installed it as an IOS and not on boot2. The only thing I could think of now, according to some, is the savemiifrii. And in my search through the net IOS60/61 did brick a lot of Wii's some are lucky some are not to fix their Wii with bootmii. Now I know now how to do a backup which I should have done before doing these custom install. I have learned my lesson the hard and expensive way.
IOS60/61 was even in the list of one of the most dangerous apps for the Wii. http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/unbricking/dangerous-app
So for does who brick their Wii we will be keeping it until someone finds a remedy or sell piece-by-piece?
I think I won't be slapping my head. I will bang my head on the wall.

sorry to hear that bud,
always best to follow the directions point for point.
not that it helps you now.

tbh i got smb wii last night and wasnt too keen on running the required update it comes with.
it did update but for some reason i'm still on 4.1 and hbc is still there.

@paulb NSMB only needed to update IOS53, it didn't need to update your System Menu

also, if you can access the HomeBrew Channel through BootMii on a bricked Wii with no backup, a good bet is to use Firmware Downgrader 1.11 MOD 1.24, which comes with all the wad files needed to install System Menu 4.1 on your Wii if you download the Mediafire WeHackWii Package listed on the USB Loader page: http://wehackwii.pbworks.com/USB-Loader

you can read more about it on the Firmware page: http://wehackwii.pbworks.com/Firmware

Yeah i figured that out as it didn't delete anything mate.
Although it did come with the same warning about deleting unauthorized mods
that comes with the 4.2 e-mail (hence my concern about running the update on the game)

Thanks for the firmware downgrader tip.
Will keep that in mind if I'm ever stupid enough to brick my wii
It's amazing how many people I have seen on here and other forums
that forget to follow simple instructions (ie backup your bloody NAND)

Ah, yes, my fault, I misunderstood you without any confirmation. The boot2v4 update is a bit dangerous, about a 1:1000 chance of a brick via Nintendo approved software, heh. I'm glad you came out unscathed.

Me too,
The only reason I discovered this was because I decided to check my bootmii install still worked
after all the recent brick activity here.
And guess what....it was deleted.

Re-installed now & alls good.
Although I best make another NAND backup to be on the safe side

Those who got their Wii bricked by this IOS60/61. Have any of you tried savemiifrii? Any success?

@paulb & @haruspex
Any info on whether a savemiifrii will work on a fully bricked Wii (4.0u) prior to patching or installing IOS60/61?
