Firmware

Page history last edited by Haruspex 13 years, 9 months ago

Note: This page is about the Firmware on your Wii and upgrading/downgrading it.  For hacking any Wii, please refer to the USB Loader page.

Which Firmware is on my Wii?

On the channels page of your Wii, in the lower-left corner, is the Wii Options button.  Click on it.  Now click on Wii Settings.  You will be presented with the Wii System Settings 1 page.  In the upper-right corner is the current Wii Firmware you are running.

Which Firmware is most recommended?

At the moment, 4.1 is the most recommended firmware.  The least recommended is 4.3 followed by 4.2, please don't use them.  4.2 and 4.3 did not add any positive capabilities to the system, only tactics for hindering homebrew (all of the 4.2 tactics have been bypassed at this point using methods described on the USB Loader page, whereas 4.3 is still being worked on).

4.2 is the same as 4.1 except that 4.2 added anti-piracy features. There is ZERO advantage to a 4.2 upgrade.

4.3 is the same as 4.2 with the addition of IOS58 (which you can install safely via DOP-Mii) for USB camera support. 4.3 also added a slew of more successful anti-piracy features. There is ZERO advantage to a 4.3 upgrade.

Firmware 4.1 is the same as 4.0 with only one difference.  Firmware 4.1 includes a fix for a bug with Wii Sports Resort.  That's it.  There is no reason to be on 4.0 instead of 4.1.  The better choice is 4.1, hands down.

All firmware is fully hackable, with varying degrees of issues.  There is no need to remain on any firmware below 4.0.  If you are on a firmware below 4.0, then you are missing out on SDHC support and the ability to store games and channels and launch them from an SD(HC) card.

For more detailed information on the differences between firmware/System Menu versions, review the System Menu page on WiiBrew.

How do I upgrade/downgrade my Firmware to 4.1(J/U/E)?

It's super easy with DOP-Mii.  This is included in the WeHackWii Package.

If you have not yet installed the HomeBrew Channel, then you'll need to head over to the USB Loader page and learn how to hack your Wii. Once you are done with that guide, then come back here and follow the steps below to install the most recommended firmware 4.1 on your Wii system.

  1. Launch DOP-Mii from the HomeBrew Channel
  2. Press A to continue.
  3. Choose and IOS which works for you, such as IOS36 or IOS222
  4. Press A to continue.
  5. Select IOSs and press A
    1. Select IOS37
      1. press A to install the latest version
      2. press A to continue
      3. press A to apply Sig Hack Check
    2. Select IOS38
      1. press A to install the latest version
      2. press A to continue
      3. press A to apply Sig Hack Check
    3. Select IOS53
      1. press A to install the latest version
      2. press A to continue
      3. press A to apply Sig Hack Check
    4. Select IOS55
      1. press A to install the latest version
      2. press A to continue
      3. press A to apply Sig Hack Check
    5. Select IOS60 (Important: This must complete successfully before doing step 6)
      1. press A to install the latest version (Version 6400 of IOS60 is a stub, use the previous version)
      2. press A to continue
      3. press A to apply Sig Hack Check
  6. Select System Menu
    1. Select System Menu 4.1
    2. Select your region
    3. Press A to select
    4. Press A to continue
  7. You may now restart your Wii and enjoy 4.1

Is there an alternative upgrade/downgrade method?

Yes, you can use WAD Manager (which is included in the WeHackWii Package) to install the IOS37, IOS38, IOS60, BC, MIOS, and Wiisystemmenu (448 for NTSC-J, 449 for NTSC-U, or 450 for PAL) included with the WeHackWii Package. This will install 4.1, with the option for J/U/E up to you.

  1. In addition to the WeHackWii Package, you will need to download the 4.1 WAD Files
  2. Copy the following .wad files into the wad folder:
  • IOS37-64-v3869.wad
  • IOS38-64-v3610.wad
  • IOS60-64-v6174.wad
  • RVL-bc-v5.wad
  • RVL-mios-v9.wad
  • One of the following:
    • For NTSC-J (e.g. Japan): RVL-WiiSystemmenu-v448.wad
    • For NTSC-U (e.g. North America): RVL-WiiSystemmenu-v449.wad
    • For PAL (e.g. Europe): RVL-WiiSystemmenu-v450.wad

Launch WAD Manager from the HomeBrew Channel Install the .wad files listed in step 1

You can then use AnyTitleDeleter DB (which is included in the WeHackWii Package) to uninstall IOS30 (used by System Menu 3.0-3.3), IOS50 (used by System Menu 3.4), or IOS70 (used by System Menu 4.2) if you wish, and use DOP-Mii (which is included in the WeHackWii Package) to install IOS53, IOS55, and re-insert the Trucha Bug into IOS60 if you want to launch WiiWare from the SD card.

I'm on 4.3, is there anything I can do?

You can try using the Smash Stack or Indiana Pwns methods to launch DOP-Mii or WAD Manager and roll back according to the above methods. This may be risky and could brick you Wii, so we will not go into details at the moment. If you are competent enough to understand the first sentence of this paragraph and execute it yourself, please comment below about your experience. Otherwise, you should probably wait for more information and a more bullet-proof method.

Some people have had success with the Restore Your cIOS on 4.3 Wii guide. It follows the method mentioned in the above paragraph.

Here is a more detailed Indiana Pwns method guide: Wii Firmware 4.3 Downgrade _ Guide: Downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.

There is also a 4.3 Virgin Softmod guide, but it is untested by the writers here.

Firmware Downgrader never worked well. I've heard everything from hangs like that to bricks from it not installing IOSes.

Try the alternative method posted above.

So that's why I don't see any channels on SD card. Thanx for that info. Any way around that yet for us that unknowingly upgraded to 4.2U? Everything works so far out of Homebrew and I can add channels but I'd rather have them on SD. Thanx again

haruspex said

If you want to launch from your SD card, you will need to use dop-IOS to re-insert the singnature hash check (Trucha Bug) into IOS70 for 4.2 or IOS60 for 4.0/4.1

MOOSElander said

at 10:11 pm on Dec 1, 2009

Why did you Just delete that! 4.2 is PERFECTLY Hackable! Im a homebrew App developer and it works like a CHARM!!! Please do not delete other peoples work!

haruspex said

at 10:12 pm on Dec 1, 2009

Moose, the method you are are adding to this page is not within the subject of Firmware modification. It does not belong on this page.

haruspex said

at 10:13 pm on Dec 1, 2009

We all know 4.2 is hackable and it has said so for ages on the USB Loader page. The WeHackWii Package has supported 4.2 hacking for some time now.

MOOSElander said

at 10:13 pm on Dec 1, 2009

The remove the "The least recommended is 4.2, please don't use it. 4.2 did not add any positive capabilities to the system, only tactics for hindering homebrew (all of which have been bypassed at this point)." Its perfectly hackable now! And where do you suggest I move it?

haruspex said

at 10:16 pm on Dec 1, 2009

At the moment, it is perfectly reasonable to create a new page dedicated to 4.2 hacking, although this is already covered on the USB Loader page, so may be a bit redundant. 4.2 is still the least recommended, it does not say anywhere on this page that it is not hackable, only that it is a nuisance to be avoided. It is public knowledge now that the 4.2 update did not add any useful new function to the Wii, only junk.

MOOSElander said

at 10:18 pm on Dec 1, 2009

But I beleive people should still know how to hack it if they are stuck on 4.2

haruspex said

I agree, and people do know. The USB Loader page on this site explains it. The method you posted is no different.

I think this would be a perfect place on how to hack 4.2. I mean the firmware site might be a little off subject, however I'm sure people will stumble on this and find it useful to be available here. I know I would expect it to be listed with how to downgrade it.

haruspex said

at 12:11 am on Dec 2, 2009

I've edited the page to make it more clear that 4.2 is hackable and where to go on this site to see our instructions for hacking any Wii.

MOOSElander, just want to thank you for helping push to get things more organized so that people can find the information they need faster. I appreciate your input.

haruspex said

at 12:14 am on Dec 2, 2009

@Giterdone

If you want to launch from your SD card, you will need to use dop-IOS to re-insert the singnature hash check (Trucha Bug) into IOS70 for 4.2 or IOS60 for 4.0/4.1

What MOOSElander is talking about is how the old BannerBomb, which launches from the SD Channels menu on your Wii settings, no longer works for 4.2, but has since been updated to work. It seems like what you, Giterdone, are having trouble with is installing Channels to your SD card (such as WiiWare) and launching them from there. The fix I mentioned above is what gets that back up and running.

Giterdone said

haruspex said

at 8:24 pm on Dec 8, 2009

@Leebob, use WAD Manager 1.5 to install the included IOS60, but then go back and use dop-IOS MOD for everything else if you can. So do dop-IOS MOD steps 1-5 (skipping 5v), then install IOS60-64-v6174.wad with WAD Manager 1.5, then go back to dop-IOS MOD and do step 6 and 7.

@Shaun_Wells, you need your SD card to be in the Wii for this. HomeBrew Channel looks on your SD card in the apps folder for applications. Make sure there is a folder on your SD card called "apps" and inside that another folder called "Dop-IOS MOD v9gp"

Leebob said

Thanks again for getting back. I did what you said but In the when I get to the (select IOS you want to drop) (IOS60) I currently Installed v6174 but
It doesnt give me an option to press A.(Install latest).
Also In homebrew browser It will not see USBLoader GX on my sd card. I thinking Its because Im not on v4.1 yet.
Thanks for all your help with this.

haruspex said

at 1:48 pm on Dec 9, 2009

@Leebob, if it gives you an option to press (-) to install old version, that's fine, too. You will still get the option to ad the signature hash check (Trucha bug).

Leebob said

at 4:40 pm on Dec 9, 2009

Hi, Haruspex. It did let me press (-) to Install old version no problem. But It then took me back to the same screen (press (-) to Install old version).
It doesnt let me go to step 6. The IOS I want to drop = IOS60 ---- Currently Installed = v6174
Pressing (-) says Install old v6174 of IOS60. Its bugging me know lol.

Also on a side note can you tell me why In homebrew browser I cant load/see usbloadergx?

Thank you.

haruspex said

at 7:43 pm on Dec 12, 2009

*sigh* Franz, don't talk about things you don't know about. IOS60 is the System Menu for Firmware 4.0 and 4.1 It is not bugged. Your source of a "wii hack vid on youtube" is pretty much worthless. Leebob is simply having an issue with getting the signature hash check into IOS60 (also known as the Trucha bug, which in this case means vulnerability, as in the Trucha bug is a back door that let's us do special stuff on the Wii, it's a good thing).

@Leebob, I'm not sure why you're having trouble. Make sure that when you start dop-IOS and it asks "Which IOS would you like to use to install other IOSs?" that you select IOS36 and NOT IOS60. Make sure you are using the absolute latest version of dop-IOS (http://www.mediafire.com/?x1mjk1anrgf). When you press (-), the latest version will change to a new screen asking you "Are you sure you want to install IOS60 v6174?" You'll press A to say yes. It will then ask "Apply Sig Hash Check patch in IOS60?" and you'll again press A to say yes. If you don't have an IOS60 file on your SD card, it will fetch it from the Internet. You will need to have your Wii properly set up for wireless to do this. However, the latest WeHackWii Package should have a copy of IOS60-64-v6174.wad (http://www.mediafire.com/?2oyoe3nb4qy).

haruspex said

at 9:08 pm on Dec 12, 2009

@Leebob, btw, it sounds like you have IOS60 installed with WAD Manager just fine and are free to go ahead and do step 6. You don't need the Trucha bug to move on to firmware 4.1 you know. You can always bother with that later.

I did something stupid and uninstalled my Wii System Menu. I was hoping to change the region by simply uninstalling the v448 WAD and installing the v449 WAD. Apparently that wouldn't work. I now get a black screen. Nothing loads. I tried Preloader and successfully went to the Homebrew channel, but my Wii Remote won't sync to the Wii! Any help, or I'm screwed?

I have been able to do everything using the Wad manager up to installing the system menu. It keeps returning a error 1015 when I try to install the system menu wad. I can't install the Version 4.1 menu. Is there a way to get around that? I tried going to Dop IOS mod and installing it from there.... it downloads all the content like its supposed to but as soon as it tries to install it, it returns the same error code. I used Dop IOS to make sure that all of my IOS files are exactly the ones needed (stated in the alternative method list) I don't know what else to do to install the 4.1 menu. Is there something i'm doing wrong?

Quick question on step 5 v.
Select IOS60 (Important: This must complete successfully before doing step 5)

Does this mean that you must first update IOS60 and then, IOS37, 38…
Or was that a typo and it should say step 6?

Thanks guys for these great guides it has cleared up a lot of questions.

@Zen, have you tried re-syncing the WiiMote? Open the panel to the SD card slot on your Wii and you'll see a red button. Push that. Then, take off the battery cover on your WiiMote and you'll see a red button. Push that.

@Krammitman, Are you sure it's 1015 and not 1017? Try clearing your SD(HC) card and putting everything back on, it sounds like a read error

@Jose, it should have said step 6, sorry. IOS60 is necessary to have installed before installing System Menu 4.1

@pharoah85, you may just need to remove USB Loader GX from your SD(HC) card and re-copy it, or get the latest version from the official site: http://code.google.com/p/usbloader-gui/downloads/list

I believe it is having an issue because of initially trying to do the usb loader hack to it using different instructions. installing bootmii as ios
you can still access it if you have priiloader installed
whereas bootmii installed as boot2 you can access directly

correct me if im wrong guys (mine is boot2 so not sure)

Can anyone tell me with a reasonable amount of certainty what will happen when I run the forced "update" that is required on the first use of Band Hero? I have followed the USB loader mods. So i have homebrew operational, but i was never able to get usb loadergx to run because of IOS issues that i gave up on. My wii is at 4.2U. and it was before i tried modding. I wanted to hear from you guys before I allowed it to check the system which is modified to some extent.

paulb said

at 3:45 am on Feb 3, 2010

Well for a start it will delete bootmii if installed, by overwriting your boot2v4
Other than that it should just update ios56 if required
This is used by usb controller games
Also any other ios files it has in the disc update

If you have priiloader you can deny update checks
Alternatively neogamma will block update checks by default
As a rule, if you have any kind of homebrew/mods on your wii
never update via disc/nus, block any updates & update manually

Hi. I am also having a problem downgrading from 4.2u to 4.1u. I have a modded Wii and accidentally upgraded my firmware to 4.2u. I am following the main instructions for the Dop-IOS MOD. When I set the IOS to 36, the IOS successfully loads. But when I then try to modify IOS37, everything works through all 15 content upgrades, but then I get "0) failed: -1017" I also get "install returned -1" "Installation complete!" "ERROR: Something failed. (ret: -1)". Then, if I try to update IOS38 I get "Failed to create temp file" and I am returned to the HBC channel menu. I tried starting again, using IOS222 instead of IOS36, but it hangs saying "Loading selected IOS". Is it safe to continue through the other upgrades or is there something else I should be doing to ensure that the changes are made successfully? Thank you so much for your attention.

I am trying to DOWNGRADE 4.2->4.1. I had sucessfully done it once before on the same Wii but restored the NAND because I thought I messed up something else AFTER the downgrade. Now I am trying to do it (4.2->4.1) AGAIN and I am always getting a "-1 failure" error at this step:
v.Select IOS60 (Important: This must complete successfully before doing step 6). All the other steps work fine.
Why it worked once then after the NAND restore fails at the "step 5" I don't understand.
Any thoughts?
Any suggestions?

I am wanting to upgrade from 3.2U to 4.1U. My Wii is hacked with Homebrew Channel, USB loaders, DVD dumper, All sorts of Wii channels (wads), etc. If I use the first method to upgrade to 4.1U, would I have to reinstall everything back into my Wii once the upgrade has completed? I have done so much to my Wii that I am afraid that I would not remember how to reinstall everything back into it.

haruspex said

@Gerry @gary, http://wehackwii.pbworks.com/Error-Codes

@MisterEd, it is because there is a stub file there. You will need to remove the stub IOS 60 first using AnyTitleDeleter and then re-install it (and say yes to the Signature Hash Check).

@El_Rey, you won't have to re-install anything. Method one only updates the System Menu and WiiWare IOS files. It does not remove anything, and you will maintain access to everything already on your Wii. Make sure that IOS 60 installs successfully (and say yes to the Signature Hash Check) BEFORE installing System Menu 4.1

haruspex said

@MadameDefarge, try using http://wiibrew.org/wiki/DOP-Mii instead of dop-IOS MOD, and make sure your IOS 36 has the Trucha bug (signature hash check).

hey haruspex,

forginve my ignorance but i have successfully hacked my 4.2 wii but now if i try a new game disc it asks me to do a system update?
whats the best way to do this as to not brick my wii...

haruspex said

at 7:37 pm on Mar 23, 2010

@Sam_d, The disc updates are, the majority of the time, only specific IOS upgrades. The disc is rarely actually caring about what System Menu you are on and really just wants you to update a specific IOS. For example, IOS56 needs to be upgraded for Rock Band. Usually a Google search or a visit to http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showforum=104 will help you determine which IOS needs to be upgraded.

You will upgrade these IOS files using http://wiibrew.org/wiki/DOP-Mii

You can also install Preloader or Priiloader to block future disc channel updates: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader or http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader/Priiloader

Hi, to the letter, other than istalling HB channel the run dop-ios is the next step that i failed on then trying to run wad manager is also an issue and for the two i get the same message- cannot boot file!! I also did a NAND back up sucessfully through HB channel so does this mean that i ahve successful HB. PS sorry i am posting you messages on two pages now, thanks zoe

Serberus said

at 3:42 pm on Apr 9, 2010

WADs should be put in the wad folder on your SD card, make sure the dop-IOS .dol file is named "boot.dol". Also, make sure there is no "boot.dol" or "boot.elf" file in the root of your SD as this can cause unexpected problems. Also, with the 4.1 wad files, I noticed one there is a "IOS60-64-v6174" and "IOS60-64-v6174-TRUCHA", any insight into this haruspex, just looking at it, it looks like the first could unto the Trucha bug?

(account deleted) said

hi, thanks Serberus, i have a boot.elf in the root folder, this was form installing HBC, thought i had to keep it there? so it is safe to remove? Also i downloaded the wad files from the link above and i cannot find •IOS38-64-v3610.wad, there is an IOS38-64-v3867.wad, should i used that one instead of the one listed above? thanks again i feel i am getting really close...

haruspex said

at 12:46 pm on Apr 10, 2010

@Serberus, IOS60-64-v6174 is a clean copy of IOS60 and IOS60-64-v6174-TRUCHA has the signature hash check applied so that users can play WiiWare from other Wii consoles via fakesigning

Serberus said

@Leo: The HackMii is on the root of the SD card. Go to the channel management page in the Wii menu, and click the SD Card tab on the top right. It should ask if you want to launch boot.dol/elf? Say Yes and it'll load HackMii, and you can uninstall/reinstall HBC.

Hi guys. I tried to do the USB loader hack, its nearly there, except for the crashing of USB Loader and the black screen before it loads with the IOS249 stuff. I was thinking of updating to 4.1, but can i even if i have tried all the steps of the hack or do i have to do something to put my wii back before all the alterations to the IOS files?

Ben said

at 6:36 am on May 1, 2010

Hi guys. I was following the guide to see how to upgrade the wii and when i select IOS37 and press A, nothing happens. It says that the current version installed on IOS37 is v3609 when but when i move it from Title to Version, it shows that there is actually a version v3612 and v3869. Instrad of pressing A, should i be just pressing the plus sign to install a newer version of should i just do the other method of updating to 4.1?

Ben said

at 4:44 am on May 2, 2010

@Haruspex: should i apply the FakeSign (Truch) patch to any of the IOS if the option is available?

Haruspex said

at 11:59 am on May 2, 2010

It's better not to do so. You only need the FakeSign applied to IOS 36 and IOS 60 (if on 4.0 or 4.1, if you're on 4.2 then IOS 70).

Haruspex said

at 12:01 pm on May 2, 2010

Moving from an older firmware to firmware 4.1 will not hurt or break any previous hacks if you follow the guide on this page. I have successfully upgraded firmware on 4 Wii systems this weekend using ONLY DOP-Mii and have had 100% success.

On DOP-Mii, you press [+] to install the latest version.

What I do is run DOP-Mii and update the following IOS files, applying the ES_Identify and NAND Permissions ONLY to IOS36 and IOS60:
IOS21
IOS35
IOS36 (Apply ES_Identify and NAND Permissions)
IOS37
IOS38
IOS53
IOS55
IOS56
IOS57
IOS60 (Apply ES_Identify and NAND Permissions, also this one MUST install properly or you can brick)
IOS61

You can also update:
BC
MIOS

Once done with that, you can install System Menu 4.1 using DOP-Mii and you'll be all set.

Keep in mind that HomeBrew Channel may be using one of these IOS files as its support IOS, and this will break the HomeBrew Channel temporarily. This is normal, all you need to do is run the HackMii installer again and re-install the HomeBrew Channel.

It is recommended that you DO NOT apply FakeSign or NAND Permissions to any IOS other than IOS36 and IOS60. It is unnecessary and can cause issues on your Wii.

Ben said

at 1:50 am on May 3, 2010

@Haruspex: I did the update and now it works, USB Loader still boots with a black screen and has green boxes on the top of the screen when i mount games before the game loads and now it doesnt freeze when i just try to install a game to the USB Drive, only thing i had to fix was to change the boot to IOS222 cose on IOS 249, it crashed a few times when i clicked on the "Mount on drive" option.

Haruspex said

at 2:08 am on May 3, 2010

@Ben, so all is good now? Awesome. I should probably include a config file with the WeHackWii package which sets 222 as the boot IOS already. I wanted the SD contents to be as clean as possible, so I let USB Loader GX set up its own config, but that may just be causing more annoyances than necessary. Thanks for your feedback and happy hacking!

paulb said

at 6:43 am on May 3, 2010

TBH the mount disc option on my usbloadergx crashes the app too
But then again I don't use a usb loader to load backup disc games only HDD games
I just assumed it was a problem with the loader itself

Serberus said

at 1:09 am on Jul 10, 2010

@Dark101: Any software modding has a chance of bricking your Wii. There are pros and cons to every method. Both methods have been tested and laid out specifically to minimize the probability of bricking a Wii, but there is always a chance, although it's slim. As long as you don't stray from the instructions, you should be alright. Just make sure you have a NAND backup and a way to boot to BootMii.
Does something in particular about the suggested method have you spooked?

@Daniel, technically yes, as DOP-Mii can let you change your System Menu to 4.2 (or earlier). I would recommend 4.1, as stated above. Just use DOP-Mii to ensure you have IOS 60 installed, and then install System Menu 4.1 via the instructions above.

Hey Serb, where the hell you been :D

@Shane
If you don't already have a NAND backup your pretty much screwed with a fully bricked Wii.
You should have made one when you first started modifying your Wii

Do you still have the BootMii files on your SD card, or backed up somewhere?
If BootMii is still installed and you have the files on your SD card it will automatically load up before the Wii OS does.
From there it "may" be possible to use a donor NAND to fix it, but I can't guarantee it

paulb said

@jay weldon
Sounds like DarkCorp.
That has pros and cons as it replaces almost every IOS with cIOS's (custom IOS's)
which to be honest isn't necessary. You only need to replace 2-3 IOS's at best to run homebrew etc.
On the other hand it is helpful for those who do not use HDD loading to be able to use the disc channel to load games.

There are already links on the front page to hack a 4.3 Wii, but if there is call for this we can include it here.

Thanks for the info though.

paulb said

AFAIK the only way to play backups via the disc channel is by installing Darkcorp
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=238779
Have a look at the thread and see if it can help you out.

I would however advise that darkcorp is a complete IOS replacement mod, which in my opinion is unnecessary
as you only need to replace 2 IOS's in theory to run homebrew etc.
But if that's the only way you can get it going it may be a good option.

btw for smashstack or indianpwns you could take a trip to your local video store.
